Flavour bombs in a Canadian-Korean gastropub

Oddesoul is a Canadian-Korean gastropub. It’s probably the only one in its category in Toronto. Sure, there are loads of Korean gastropubs in the city but none of them push the fusion envelope that far. Far from fusion confusion, nearly every dish is excellent.

Oddseoul is one of the earliest kids on the Ossington block. The strip of Ossington Avenue between Dundas and Queen Street has grown into a culinary mecca in the past decade. Oddseoul definitely helped build that reputation. Despite its success, Oddseoul is oddly low-key. There is no signboard and I’ve walked by it accidentally on more than one occasion. The only clue is the inconspicuous letters on its mailbox. For the longest time, its online presence was just a stagnant Instagram page. The COVID-19 pandemic finally forced them to create a DoorDash account for takeout orders.

Uniquely Canadian-Thai

Toronto has no shortage of good Thai restaurants that stay true to traditional recipes. It’s about time that a stellar Canadian-Thai restaurant came along. Canadian-Thai is what I call food that is not quite Thai. It features local produce and Canadian flavour combinations.

The most un-Canadian thing about Favorites Thai is its name. It should be spelt “Favourites”. Other than that, expect to find uniquely Canadian interpretations of Thai cuisine here. No, I am not talking about pad thai with ketchup.

Bang Bang Ice Cream and Bakery

Best ice cream in Toronto

If you didn’t know, the best time to get ice cream is in the dead of winter. Go during the night if you can. That way, you can avoid summer lineups. It might sound like a joke, but not until you see the queues at Bang Bang Ice Cream during warmer months.

Bang Bang seems like any other boutique ice cream store on the surface. Indie, takeout only, free samples, some creative flavours, but not eyebrow-raising like Death In Venice. Their strength lies in perfecting what they do. I am no ice cream connoisseur but Bang Bang is superior to chi-chi ice creameries I’ve tried in foodie American cities.

Their unique claims to fame include ice cream cradled in Hong Kong egg waffles (鷄蛋仔) and signature flavours like Totaro (ube and coconut) and London Fog (Earl Grey). “Bakery” is in Bang Bang’s full name, though they really only produce confections that can be slathered with ice cream. This isn’t a knock on their baked products. They are good but ice cream is really Bang Bang’s raison d’être.

The Central European dumplings of Toronto

Discover the starchy delights of spätzle, knedlíky, halušky, and nokedli in Toronto (and finding the best)

The iconic Central European food is undoubtedly the schnitzel, a thin, breaded slab of meat. It’s filling and easy to make, which explains its popularity outside the region. Witness cotoletta (Italy) and milanesa (Argentina and Brazil).

But we are not here to talk about something that is famous enough already. Today, we go on a tour of the second-most iconic food of Central Europe: dumplings. These are the underappreciated workhorses that give the cuisine a reputation for being heavy and starchy. Not to be confused with Asian dumplings, these dumplings are bite-sized lumps of flour, potato, or egg. They are also universally bland, so the skill comes in the texture and shape.

Toronto is blessed to have full representation of the dumplings of Central Europe: Germany/Austria/Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary. (I left out Poland because their most famous dumpling, pierogi, is too divergent from the others. But if you are interested in Polish kopytka, Café Polonez is a good bet.)

One can easily go on a taste test around the city and debate which is the better variant. And that is exactly what I did.
